[1:08] Item IVd. District Recognition: Disability Awareness Month. The excellent presentation’s theme can be captured in a highlighted quote by R. Hensel: “Know me for my abilities, not my disabilities” …please take some time to watch the presentation on YouTube or at least review the slides. [ppt]
[1:14] IVe. Secondary School Spotlight: Innovations Academy/Walnutwood High School: This presentation included a student spotlight from a Walnutwood HS student. Additionally, students from the leadership team of Innovators highlighted the student support and opportunities offered by these unique programs including a leadership team member who will graduate from HS next year with an Associates degree as well thanks to dual enrollment. Kudos to the students and their supportive teachers. [ppt]
[1:27] As part of the consent agenda there was an introduction of Jennifer Fusano as Chief Finance and Transportation Officer. [2:46] X. In lieu of the FCEA president's report, teachers Lisa B and Kirstin H from PJS spoke on behalf of their colleague about challenges with all-day Kindergarten. Since all day K began, there has been a marked increase in out of school suspensions including assault on staff and damage of property. This does not include all of the incidents happening at schools that don’t lead to that extreme end. The behavioral issues are fewer on Thursday with early release days. We are asking 5 year olds to be in school for 6 ½ hours a day. This is contributing to exhaustion, tears, melt-downs and increased behaviors from students as well as burn out when what we really want are children excited to come to school to learn. The teachers have two suggestions: SLIP schedules or early release (there is room in the minutes to reduce). FCEA will be following up with additional data and to advocate for a kindergarten schedule that respects child development without lowering expectations. [ppt]
[3:17] XIIc. Update to BP6146.1 to reflect ethnic studies expectations for high school graduation. While this is unfunded, state law makes this a requirement for the class of 2030. FCUSD has many options for students including a full year elective, a semester paired with health, embedding the content within other courses ranging from art to English 9, and even dual enrollment with Folsom Lake College. There was extended board concern about the number of courses at FHS vs Vista or CHS and what impact increased graduation requirements have on the FHS students. [pdf]
[4:25] XIIe. Sean Martin’s 2nd Interim Budget Report. [ppt]
[4:58] XIII. LCAP Mid Year update for FCCC. [ppt]
