School Board Meeting Report: Jan. 9, 2025

January 9, 2025

Here are the links to the agenda and YouTube video of the meeting.

Below is the time stamp from the video with highlights of topics likely to be of interest to our members.

  • 1:14  During the public comments portion there was a 4 person presentation starting with Channa Pitt, Ass’t Sup. of Ed. Services at SVCOE.  She overviewed the Sacramento County READS initiative, an effort to address literacy.  She was joined by 3 members of the Sacramento Literacy Foundation who talked about the Science of Reading.  They were jointly requesting the board join SCOE on this project with a resolution, at the end of the evening the Board indicated that they wanted to see that resolution at an upcoming meeting.  This group fits well with Erik Swanson’s goal on 3rd grade literacy when students move from learning to read to reading to learn.

  • 1:27  Jeannette Sansonbach’s FCEA President’s report wished everyone a happy new year and highlighted the focus on communication and collaboration we’ve collectively focused on so far this year and included examples like developing the new Evaluation Process and Benefits.

  • 1:33  The only presentation of the evening was of the district’s Audit.  Each year FCUSD must undergo an independent audit of its fiscal records.  There were two findings (dings) this year.  This was the second year that the sampling process had a site (different site than last year) with an incorrect attendance record for a sampled student.  A district wide effort is being made to meet with attendance clerks and a reminder page for teachers regarding attendance processes is in development.  Our funding is based on accurate ADA and negative findings can cost us money.  The second finding cited 3 student errors that affected our UPP and the district was fined approx $290,000.  This happened last year when there was a gap in switching to a new, more accurate, process to record low socioeconomic status students.  FCUSD acknowledges one was in error but is prepared to appeal the other two with the support of the board and the auditors which will hopefully reduce or erase the fine assessed.

There is a special board study session Saturday Jan 18th.  The next regular board meeting is January 234rd.
