Note: There was minimal interactions regarding compensation today. Teams meet next week on March 19th where the district is expected to come with a response to FCEA's counter offer. See the end of the notes for what was said regarding this topic on the 12th.
We came to an agreement on several MOUs and a job descriptions today.
Community Schools: Job description for the Student Support Specialist - after review by the people currently in the position, Kate Hazarian, Carla Gayman-Davis and the CS steering committee a line was added about promoting/supporting community school pillars and some adjustments as to how this position can support students needs if they do not hold a social work or mental health credential. We also updated the Community Schools MOU’s language and extended the renewal date to 2029 to be in line with the grant funding. Both documents will have a copy of the CS pillars included as an appendix.
Elementary Prep job description: A version for VAPA teachers was shared. After discussion at the table it was agreed to rework the existing job description to change the title to Elementary Specialis and include a list of the areas covered (elementary PE, VAPA, Science and Spanish) and the person who oversees that group. This allows for maximum flexibility as to how the preps for gen ed teachers are provided while also recognizing the work of the specialist teachers.
Comprehensive HS Supervision MOU (signed!): H. Cadenhead and K. Moore reported that the three sites worked collaboratively as admin/fcea reps to determine the supervision needs at the site. With all unit members participating the total number of duties was 5 for FHS, 4 for CHS and Vista. Schools reported some struggle to keep the duties limited to 3 hours. MOU said “no more than 4” so it appears to be working. We extended the pilot for an additional year. Next fall, we will convene a meeting with the MS principals and reps to review what is happening at their sites to see if existing contract language covers them or if we need to expand the MOU to cover their needs.
Appendix D (the gift that keeps on giving) were presented. The edits presented bring the sports/clubs/music programs up-to-date with current practice. Appendix D6, which includes PD pay, is now included on page 1 so that any ongoing increases in compensation will be applied going forward.
Mid-year job postings will be done during workdays only. We recently had a situation where the job was posted during a break. [Summer postings are still the responsibility of the applicant to check while school is not in session]
New Teacher Orientation: The additional days before school starts for new teachers and additional days for SPED have been coming up annually with specific calendar dates. This MOU clarifies when the days occur without a need to have the academic calendar clearly identified dates available and extends through the 26-27 school year..
New MOU was proposed for CTE (Career Technical Education certificate) teachers: This MOU is designed to do two things. (1) Document the alternate credentialing options from CTC to meet CTE certification and (2) facilitate the placement on the salary scale by counting credit for outside experience (CTC specifically identifies what experience may be used) for up to 9 years with accompanying documentation. In addition to applying to new hires, current CTE teachers may submit their paperwork by Oct. 1 to have their step placement re-evaluated for the 25-26 school year.
Other:
Teacher evaluation language is still in the works. Additional work has been done to coordinate TalentEd documentation with the proposed contract language. A separate MOU to address next year’s Pilot and how to resume teacher evaluations, currently suspended for tenured teachers in good standing, is in progress and will be reviewed on March 19th.
The successes and hard work of the TOSA program was on full display with a short presentation from Joanie Cunningham. Over half of our new SPED preschool and elementary staff are a part of the TOSA program.
And…the district did NOT come back with a counter to our counteroffer, but they did have a presentation for us to once again tell us about why their offer was a fair and equitable offer. More to come…stay tuned…
NEXT MEETING: MARCH 19th, half day
