[1:12] IVd. District Recognition Month: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, & Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Dawn Maxey Parlor teacher, parent and Equity Leader at FHS gave a presentation on Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together. The presentation included a timeline and defined the many communities, cultures and languages celebrated this month. [ppt]

VIII. Special Presentations
[1:34] National Board Celebration: 82 teachers successfully completed NB since 1994 many in leadership roles and currently 27 at schools throughout the district. Sarah Kirby-Gonzales has been supporting candidates and coordinating the program. Includes Incentive reward of $5k annually for 5 years at high priority schools….over $220,000 awarded over the past 5 years. Congratulations to the successful NB certification recipient for 2025: Paige Beeskau, Kristen Endean, and Wendy Pratt and best wishes to the 13 2025-26 candidates and 2 renewals. [ppt]
[1:46] 1:FHS and Vista participation in 2026 Academic Decathlon: Congratulations to the coaches: Jessican Mann (VdLHS) and Ryan Peterson and Melinda Wilson (FHS). This year’s theme was The Roaring 20s! Students take 7 objective tests in a span of Disciplines along with an Essay and impromptu and planned speeches and Super Quiz. Board member Addie Luong was a member of the Vista team. At the County Competition Jan 24th FHS was 1st and Vista came in 2nd. Both schools represented SCOE at the state competition March 19-22 in Santa Clara with about 50 other schools. FHS, Division 2 - 1st place Champions and Vista, Divisions 3 won 4th place. Next year’s topic: Journeys of Transformation: Migration. [ppt]
[2:02] Understanding and Addressing the Achievement and Opportunity Gap Dr. Huber and Dr. Pitt presenting. This is related to a CSBA resolution later on the agenda [Item XIId] that Board Member Chris Clark has been leading on in CSBA. This is about systematic, predictable disparities tied to opportunity and access and not ability. This involves experiences both inside and outside of school. We aren’t just focusing on outcomes - we need to also consider the inputs that reflect many areas outside of our control in education but our job is to adjust and adapt our work to meet student needs.
